If you’ve ever felt self-conscious about your teeth but don’t fancy the idea of metal braces, you’re not alone. Invisalign could be the answer. It’s a clear, comfortable way to straighten your smile without drawing attention to it. At Toothcare Dental in Medway, Kent, we offer Invisalign to our patients across Medway – including Gillingham, Chatham, Stroud, Rochester, Sittingbourne and Maidstone.
Invisalign uses a series of clear, removable aligners to gently shift your teeth over time. No brackets, no wires – just smooth, custom-made trays that fit snugly and discreetly over your teeth.
As of March 31, 2025, around 20 million people (including 5 million teens) worldwide have used Invisalign to straighten their teeth.
They’re nearly invisible when worn, so most people won’t even notice. You can take them out to eat, brush and floss, which makes day-to-day life a lot easier. It’s one of the reasons so many adults and teens prefer Invisalign over traditional braces.
Invisalign is ideal for adults and teenagers who want a straighter smile without the hassle of fixed braces. It can help with:
That said, it’s not for everyone. We’ll take a proper look and talk through your options at your initial consultation. It’s worth noting that Invisalign is a private treatment, so it isn’t available on the NHS.
Here’s a quick rundown of how things work when you choose Invisalign with us:
Chat & Check-Up – We’ll start with a relaxed consultation to understand your goals and check whether Invisalign is the right fit for you.
Digital Scans – No messy impressions here. We use a digital scanner to take accurate, comfortable images of your teeth.
Getting Started – When your aligners are ready, we’ll make sure they fit well and show you how to look after them. You’ll wear them for 20-22 hours a day.
Regular Check-Ins – Every few weeks, you’ll pop back in so we can see how things are going and hand over your next set of aligners.
Retainers – Once treatment is finished, you’ll need to wear retainers to keep everything in place. Simple.
Lets take a look at why they are so popular:
Here’s a quick side-by-side look at how Invisalign compares to traditional metal braces:
Feature | Invisalign | Traditional Braces |
---|---|---|
Appearance | Virtually invisible | Very noticeable |
Removable? | Yes – take them out to eat & clean | No – fixed in place |
Comfort | Smooth plastic – less irritation | Metal brackets can rub or cause sores |
Cleaning | Easy – remove to brush & floss | More difficult – need special tools |
Food Restrictions | None (when removed) | Yes – avoid sticky or hard foods |
Number of Appointments | Fewer – fewer adjustments needed | More regular adjustments |
Predictability | Digital scan shows estimated results | Progress assessed visit by visit |
Beyond the clear look and removable design, there are a few more reasons patients love Invisalign:

How long does Invisalign treatment take?
It depends on your teeth and how much movement is needed, but most people finish in around 6 to 18 months. We’ll give you a better idea at your consultation.
Is it painful?
Not really. You might feel a bit of pressure when switching to a new set of aligners, especially at the start, but it usually settles within a day or two.
Do I have to wear the aligners all the time?
Pretty much – 20 to 22 hours a day is the aim. Just take them out to eat, drink anything besides water, and brush your teeth.
Can I eat and drink with the aligners in?
Best not to. Stick to water when you’re wearing them and pop them out for meals or hot drinks to keep them clear and damage-free.
What if I lose an aligner?
No worries – it happens. Just give us a ring and we’ll help you figure out the next step, whether that’s moving on early or ordering a replacement.
Will I need to wear retainers afterwards?
Yes, definitely. Once your teeth are in their new position, retainers help keep them there. It’s a small step that makes a big difference.
Is Invisalign OK for teenagers?
Absolutely. Invisalign is a great option for teens who want a more discreet way to straighten their teeth, and we can talk through how it works for younger patients during your consultation.
Can I switch to Invisalign if I already have braces?
Sometimes, yes. It depends on your case. If you’re thinking about switching, we can chat it through at your appointment.
