Caring for Invisalign: Cleaning, Eating & Daily Maintenance Tips

If you’ve started Invisalign treatment – or you’re considering it – you may be wondering how to care for your aligners properly. Looking after your aligners is essential for keeping your treatment on track, preventing staining and ensuring your teeth stay healthy throughout the Invisalign process.

At Toothcare Dental in Wigmore, Gillingham, we make sure every Invisalign patient understands how to maintain their aligners confidently at home. Here’s everything you need to know.

How to Clean Invisalign Aligners Properly

Invisalign aligners should be cleaned every day to prevent plaque build-up, odour and staining.

The best way to clean your aligners is to:

  • Rinse them with lukewarm water every time you remove them
  • Gently brush them with a soft toothbrush
  • Use clear, mild antibacterial soap if needed
  • Clean them in the morning and before bed

Always brush and floss your teeth before putting your aligners back in. This helps prevent trapping food particles and bacteria against your teeth.

What Not to Use on Invisalign Aligners

To protect the clarity and structure of your aligners, avoid:

  • Hot or boiling water (this can warp the plastic)
  • Toothpaste with abrasive ingredients
  • Coloured soaps
  • Mouthwash for soaking

These products can scratch or cloud the aligners, making them more visible and less comfortable.

Can You Eat With Invisalign?

Invisalign aligners must be removed before eating or drinking anything other than water.

Eating with aligners in place can:

  • Damage or crack the aligners
  • Cause staining
  • Trap food between your teeth and aligners

Once you’ve finished eating, brush your teeth before reinserting your aligners. If brushing isn’t possible, rinse thoroughly with water until you can clean properly.

Preventing Staining During Treatment

Because Invisalign aligners are clear, they can stain if exposed to tea, coffee, red wine or smoking.

To minimise staining:

  • Remove aligners before drinking anything except water
  • Rinse aligners regularly
  • Maintain good oral hygiene
  • Avoid smoking during treatment

Keeping your aligners clean ensures they remain discreet throughout your treatment.

Storing Your Aligners Safely

When your aligners are not in your mouth, they should always be stored in their protective case.

Avoid wrapping them in tissue, as they can easily be lost or accidentally thrown away. Keeping your case with you reduces the risk of damage or misplacement.

What If My Aligners Feel Tight or Uncomfortable?

It’s normal for aligners to feel tight for the first day or two after switching to a new set. This simply means they are working.

To manage mild discomfort:

  • Switch to new aligners in the evening
  • Use recommended pain relief if needed
  • Ensure you’re wearing them for 20–22 hours per day

If aligners feel excessively painful or do not fit properly, contact the practice for advice.

Why Proper Care Matters

Consistent wear and correct maintenance play a significant role in treatment success. Wearing aligners for 20–22 hours per day and keeping them clean helps ensure your teeth move as planned.

Good Invisalign maintenance not only protects your aligners but also supports your overall oral health during treatment.
